It feels like only yesterday, the first time I discovered Psychosynthesis (PS).
I had a strong interest in spirituality for quite a few years at that time. I felt that I was looking for something without knowing what that was. My full-time job was in a Finance role, but deep down, I felt that my life lacked purpose and wanted to do something more meaningful.
Someone I knew then told me about PS, and I decided to go for a taster training weekend. I remember a feeling of “coming home” that came over me as the weekend unfolded, and something inside me was screaming: “This is what I want to do!”
The beautiful blend of psychology and spirituality drew me to this model. The idea of a Higher Self resonated deeply with me because I believe every being has a Soul that came here on this planet for a uniwque reason.
Even though I found the course quite exciting in the first year, by the end of the training, I felt disconnected from the model, and I was unsure if I wanted to be a counsellor anymore. It was only during Covid-19 that I started to reconnect and fall in love with PS again.
The person who created this therapy model at the beginning of the 1900s was Roberto Assagioli- an Italian Psychiatrist. His influences were a bit of a mix- science, physics, and esoteric Western and Eastern traditions; I believe his complex passions make PS unique.
There are two stages in this therapy model- the personal and the transpersonal psychosynthesis.
Personal ps is about exploring your struggles- wounds, limiting beliefs and getting to know the parts of yourself connected to these struggles.
Transpersonal ps is about guiding you to connect to your potential, to the highest values and qualities like joy, love, connection and more. Who would you be today without your struggles?
Transpersonal ps is also about helping you explore your spirituality in whatever way that makes sense for you. It can do that in a non-invasive way- while respecting your religious or philosophical beliefs. Assagioli said that:
“Psychosynthesis is a scientific conception, and it’s neutral towards the various religious forms and various philosophical doctrines, excepting the ones that are materialistic and therefore deny the existence of spiritual realities. Psychosynthesis does not aim or attempt to give a metaphysical nor a theological explanation of the great Mystery- it leads to the door but stops there.”
As with every therapy model, each therapist is different, has their own experience of what PS is and hopefully brings their authentic self and passions into the therapy space.
I used PS for my self-exploration and continue to do so as it helps me to discover more of my true self. Through healing my wounds, I began exploring spirituality in a way that feels more meaningful to me. The more authentic I become, the more I see the world from a different perspective- one that is more aligned with the wisdom of my Soul.
